How I spent my Christmas
Posted on

Here we are… Michaelmas term is finally over and we are already two weeks into the Lent term. For my semester break, coming from a country that does not celebrate “Christmas”, I wanted to spend that day in Manchester – U.K. We spontaneously planned the trip with my friend (also Turkish) and quickly set off. What we didn’t know was, on Christmas day, apparently every shop, bar, and restaurant would be closed. Therefore, we started searching and wandering around the beautiful streets of Manchester with a mission to find one place that is still open.
After a 15-minute walk around the city centre, we were in desperate need of coffee and we were only able to find just one bubble tea shop. We got our coffees and spent our remaining day discovering the city. After the sunset, we finally found a bar that was open (which was quite astonishing to be honest) and had our dinner as well as some fancy drinks. Even though we couldn’t walk around the Christmas Markets like we wanted to, we still had tons of fun and felt the festiveness of the holiday.
The next day, I got up early to get ready for my flight back home, to Istanbul. I was extremely excited to see my family & friends after three months. The best thing is, they did not know I was coming! I was going to surprise them. After landing, I quickly headed to my home to surprise my family. After a happy-confused-shocked reunion, I laid out plans for each friend on how to surprise them. They were contented and tremendously emotional seeing me since they thought they would not see me for a long time. I spent two fantastic weeks there and eventually returned back to the U.K. I landed at Manchester Airport and got myself a train ticket to my first love: Lancaster.
One week later, Lent term started and as usual, I started preparing for the upcoming modules beforehand. I organized my schedule for a balanced work-study-gym life to not lose my momentum and start being lazy. As always, our lecturers were very understanding of our situation getting back to our modules after the holiday and kept things slow-paced and enjoyable. I am more than happy to be back at Lancaster University and so excited about the new, fascinating modules.
