Why did you choose to study at LUMS?
I was initially recommended LUMS by an agency based in Slovakia, but I could not be happier that they identified this university. I would never have thought I would study on such a beautiful, peaceful, green campus. The library is top-notch, and I could not wish for a better place to spend my pre-exam time. The University and Management School's international rankings also helped me decide to study at LUMS.
What was the best thing about your course?
I enjoyed the ultimate freedom to make the course my own. While the essence of Marketing was maintained throughout, I was able to choose almost anything I wanted as supplementary modules. So, I made it more business-focused by choosing accounting, finance, and economics as my minor modules instead of the more creative paths some of my peers pursued. I took up a 15-month-long placement position with Myprotein, which conveyed the knowledge learned on the degree into real-life marketing practice, and I could not have enjoyed it more.
What/who inspired you most at LUMS and why?
Personally, I have always wanted to be a good leader, which is something that I saw growing up. A good leader can enhance the lives of many. So naturally, I was most inspired by the leaders in my course when I was in my first year, such as society presidents or lecturers with a passion for their field: Debbie Denton, Jekaterina Rindt, James Cronin, and Carolyn Downs.
Did you do a project, placement or study abroad? What did this involve and what did you gain?
I completed a 15-month Placement Year in Manchester with Myprotein, the biggest sports nutrition brand in the world. I gained so much from this placement; most importantly, it offered me a competitive springboard for future opportunities. I had the chance to experience how a real-life corporate environment feels and functions. It enabled me to combine academic knowledge with real-life experience. I had opportunities to run projects of my own, which resulted in increased self-confidence and capabilities. I leveraged this experience to secure a role as the president of a society within the University, and I implemented my corporate learnings into this role to ensure that I would thrive in it. This role in my final year of study enabled me to shine while doing what I love and add value here without any real-life 'consequences'. Throughout my placement year, I took on multiple marketing-related roles, including Influencer and Content marketing, complemented by a Field Sales role towards the end. I gained so much during my placement, and I recommend the opportunity to anyone who can do one. I feel it is a must and helps you gain so much valuable experience that not doing it is cutting yourself short early on in your career.
Describe your time at LUMS in three words.
Confidence-gaining, Masterful and Beautiful.
What are your best memories of your time at Lancaster?
My best memories stem from both academic and recreational activities. Academically, when a lecturer was passionate about what they taught, and I was interested in that area, it created a synergy of loving something you learn, and that's very special. In terms of extracurricular activities, both the societies and the people I met and collaborated with during my time here taught me a lot about myself and others. I also worked part-time, which enabled me to do other things more efficiently, and gave me extra spending money.
What are the best things about living in the Lancaster area?
The Greenery, The Lakes and Lancaster City. Railway hotspots enabled me to easily go anywhere in the UK, especially Manchester or Scotland. I loved the campus and found Lancaster to be affordable.
Which parts of your Lancaster experience were the best preparation for your job?
Societies, part-time jobs and my Placement Year, along with some modules on employability.
What impact has your Lancaster experience had on your career?
I would say it gave me the confidence necessary to engage in things.
Is there anything else about your LUMS experience that you'd like to share with us?
My Placement Year and the societies I have been involved with have been an immense part of my degree, and I believe that would resonate with many people. Overall, my LUMS experience has been truly worthwhile and wonderful. I could not wish for a better place to study my undergrad.
