Alexander Hacker

Country of origin: Germany

Management Trainee, Mars Petcare (Germany)

I chose to enrol on this specific programme mainly due to the structure of the course and its rankings. Having had a non-business background I wanted to get a broad overview and introduction to the different fields of management. With the diverse optional modules available, the MSc in Management offered the best opportunities to pursue my areas of interest and to expand my knowledge. I was fortunate enough not only to receive an offer but also to be awarded a full-fee scholarship from LUMS.

The programme itself was challenging but provided a very valuable experience. The group work, which formed a huge part of the course, not only helped me to develop my managerial skills but also to increase my cultural awareness. The wide range of subjects we studied and the practical approach of teaching are what I appreciated the most. Also worth highlighting are the vast opportunities to take part in additional events/activities, from ‘Meet the Employer’ events to language courses.

Besides studying I joined the gym as well as the running and triathlon society, which is a fantastic way to meet people outside the course. I also applied for the role as a student representative. As such I was communicating the interests of the student body throughout my year at Lancaster.

Overall, my year here in Lancaster has been fantastic. The different people from different nationalities and backgrounds I have met contributed a lot to make this year unforgettable. Not only will this year remain in good memory, to a greater degree it helped me in developing myself further, both personally and academically and to achieve my career aspirations.

Before finishing my degree I was able to secure a job as a consultant in a start-up business consultancy. After a challenging year in consultancy, I have joined a three-year management development programme in a multinational company (Mars Deutschland). I am convinced that it was the degree at LUMS that enabled me to follow this career path.

I very much appreciated the help from LUMS careers team throughout my year at Lancaster. They always provided valuable advice in terms of how to approach my future career and supported me throughout the various application processes. Even now after leaving university, the careers support is still available for consultation.
