Why did you choose to study at LUMS?

The outstanding reputation of Lancaster University Management School was one of the main attractions to studying here. With the LUMS Careers Service available to all Management School students, I knew that I would have access to help and support to find my perfect career after leaving university.

What was the best thing about your course?

There was a large range of Economics modules to choose from, meaning that I tailor my degree to suit my interests and strengths within Economics. The degree provided me with core mathematical and statistical skills, as well as key Economic concepts, theories and leading research in many Economics fields.

Did you do a project, placement or study abroad? What did this involve and what did you gain?

My 4-year degree included the opportunity to gain professional experience in the workplace. I undertook a year-long Industrial Placement at Rentalcars.com - a car hire price comparison website partnered with Booking.com, where I undertook the role of Pricing and Commercial Analyst. This placement allowed me to apply economics skills and knowledge that I had learned in my first two years at LUMS. My role was to price car rentals for Destination UK, Ireland, Iceland, and Scandinavia, to ensure that we were in a strong competitive position and hitting our monthly revenue and profit targets.

What are your best memories of your time at Lancaster?

Lancaster University provided me not only with my degree in Economics, but a partner and a network of close friends for life. My time as General Secretary for Grizedale JCR enabled me to manage budgets, run elections and plan Grizedale's Extrav - enabling me to get involved with college social life too.

What are the best things about living in the Lancaster area?

Lancaster is a friendly and welcoming small city, with lovely shops, bars, restaurants, parks and of course Lancaster Castle, so there is a wide range of things to do during the day and evening to suit everyone.

 What impact has your Lancaster experience had on your career?

Gaining an Economics degree from Lancaster University put me in a strong position to compete for graduate programmes and jobs. The flexibility of the degree enabled me to choose modules that interested me and were related to what I wanted to do for my future career. I have a keen interest in working for the public sector/government, so I was happy to choose modules such as Public Economics, Economic policy, Econometrics and Advanced Macroeconomics to appeal to these career types and display my competencies in these areas.

Is there anything else about your LUMS experience that you would like to share with us?

I won the Professor Balasubramanyam Prize for the Most Outstanding Performance in the field of Development Economics.
