Mission
Lancaster University China Centre (LUCC) brings together researchers across all disciplines to navigate the opportunities, challenges, scale and complexities of international China-related research. The Centre fosters sustainable and responsible engagement between Lancaster University researchers and partners around the world.
LUCC acts as a focal point at Lancaster University for research on, in, and with, China and the global Sinosphere.
Background
China is a pivotal factor in tackling the twenty-first century's global challenges, the world’s second-largest economy, a research powerhouse and a rich and diverse set of global culture encompassing the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora. At the same time, growing geopolitical tensions, authoritarianism and securitisation of global science are rendering engagements with China and the Sinophone world increasingly complex. Economic, political, ethical and strategic challenges demand China's knowledge to navigate.
Institutionally based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, but with a university-wide scope covering researchers working on, in and with China across all disciplines, LUCC leverages research strengths in social science, public policy, law, ethics and languages to support sustainable, responsible, beneficial cross-disciplinary China-related research project.
Functions
LUCC serves six mutually reinforcing strategic functions:
- Fostering and enabling cross-disciplinary linkages among LU’s researchers across disciplines working on, in or with China.
- Providing a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of LU’s China-related research, thus raising awareness of LU’s outstanding China research both within the university community and external stakeholders.
- Enhancing LU’s academic reputation and profile in China.
- Facilitating research collaboration between LU colleagues and Chinese visitors and partners.
- Supporting bids for external funding for research and engagement in, on, or with China.
- Providing constructive inputs on China research-related matters to internal and external stakeholders, including government and university management.
