Dr Sophie Patterson

NIHR Clinical Lectureship

Research Overview

Sophie is a senior Public Health Registrar and an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Public Health based in the Faculty of Health and Medicine. Her research investigates inequalities in women's sexual and reproductive health and rights. Sophie's split placement across academic and service public health ensures that her research addresses priority areas, and also affords her access to platforms to influence policy and practice.

Sophie currently works as a Public Health Registrar in the national Women's Health Team at NHS England. Sophie has worked across a variety of public health settings during her specialty training, including within local government, national government (Reproductive Health Team, DHSC), regional health protection teams (UKHSA) and NHS, granting her an appreciation of public health priorities on a local, regional and national scale.

Sophie has been awarded a Clinical Lecturer Starter Grant from the Academy of Medical Sciences to conduct research into uptake of and preferences for remote contraceptive services, and implications for health inequalities. Sophie is a co-investigator of the Canadian HIV Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health Cohort Study (CHIWOS), and continues to collaborate on projects with this team internationally.

Sophie studied Medicine at Edinburgh University and completed a PhD in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, Canada. She retains strong links with Simon Fraser University through her appointment as Adjunct Professor in Health Sciences.
