We are interested in how artificial intelligence can help make manufacturing processes “smarter” and a group is steadily growing at Lancaster which combines expertise in joining and additive manufacture with materials, computing and data science.
In collaboration with the J4IC research centre that is joint with The Welding Institute (TWI), projects in the area of intelligent friction and electron beam welding are now starting. The research at their core will seek to use novel machining learning methods to optimise processing, to learn much more rapidly how to process new materials and to enable real-time correction of problems during processing.
This is a rapidly expanding area of interest at Lancaster and we expect to be able to announce the expansion of aligned project areas in the near future.
