Reading Pedagogies of Equity: The Introduction of a Literacy Pedagogue Network to Promote Academic Reading in Teacher Education in Canada. Rachel Heydon and colleagues at the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre
This Lancaster Literacy Research Centre event will be a talk from Rachel Heydon and colleagues from Western University, University of Toronto & University of Prince Edward Island, titled Reading Pedagogies of Equity: The Introduction of a Literacy Pedagogue Network to Promote Academic Reading in Teacher Education.
Abstract:
The viral times in which we live have forced a reckoning with issues of equity and decolonisation in teacher education. An overlooked problem but also opportunity relative to these issues is the use and practice of academic reading. The Reading Pedagogies of Equity project aspires to bring into view and create potentialities with academic reading. It is doing so by launching, studying, sharing resources from, and expanding a network of literacy pedagogues, a linked group of teacher educators who can support their peers and students in critical reading praxes. This presentation will share research that expresses why this project is needed, how teacher education is a prime context for tackling reading pedagogies of equity, explicate the orientation and methodology of the research, and focus on the professional learning syllabus design that we are using to train literacy pedagogues. The presentation will also elicit feedback and discussion about the project and how university instructors might support academic reading more generally.
