Graduating students from Lancaster University will showcase their hard work across five disciplines later this month in a week-long festival.

Staged by the University’s Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), the week-long ‘festival’ is an exciting celebration of work by this year's students in Architecture, Design, Film, Fine Art and Theatre.

Running from 19 to 26 June 2024, the festival will consist of a series of events to showcase architectural and design projects, film screenings, painting, drawing, sculpture and digital Fine Art works and performances of theatre and dance.

This year’s event, entitled INHABIT, is about how artists and their art, in all media and disciplines, inhabit the spaces around them. It explores how art complements, detaches, or interacts with different spaces, and how the qualities of a space may influence an artist’s work - whether it be in a studio, on the stage, or in a gallery, public space, or the home.

The series of events are designed to showcase a diverse range of artistic mediums to provide visitors with new ways to look and reflect, and sometimes challenge, our everyday perspectives on life. Visitors can expect to see highly original painting, drawing, sculpture, new media work, animations; design innovation projects; live performances; architectural design projects and models, renders of interior and exterior building; and vibrant and intelligent film and theatre screenings.

The free event opens officially on 19 June at 6 pm and boasts ‘something for everybody’. On-campus venues hosting the festival include Bailrigg House, Bowland Annexe, the LICA Building, Peter Scott Gallery, Nuffield Theatre together with The Dukes in Lancaster city centre.

Festival Director, Dr Adrian Gradinar, said: “This is an exciting time for us as we get to see all the hard work our students have put into their degrees come together in this ambitious, striking series of events – and better still, they share their achievements with their families, friends, employers, and the wider community.

“We have live theatre performances over three days, film screenings at The Dukes, artistic expressions in paintings, sculptures, digital videos and print, photography, collage, installations, tangible and intangible materials, design projects, mock-ups and many more.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to witness how an extremely diverse group of brilliant minds responded to our challenging briefs, demonstrating wild creativity, improvisation and synergy. We are proud of how our students have handled themselves in these challenging times and this Festival clearly demonstrates their resilience.

“We would like to congratulate all the students who have worked incredibly hard to realise this ambitious event and hope visitors will enjoy it as much as we will.”

FINE ART

Fine Art student, Steven Saunders' work speculates about the future of non-human worlds, a synthetic lichen reflecting the environmental sensitivity and slow growth of lichen in the wild.

THEATRE
