The University Archive forms part of Special Collections and Archives within the University Library. The earliest material held dates back to 1961 when a proposal for a new university in North-West England was put forward by Lancashire County Council to the University Grants Committee.
The contents embrace every aspect of the University’s activities, including teaching, research, student administration and welfare, governance, academic quality control, finance and fundraising, risk, legal affairs, and estates and facilities. The collection is paper-based and is strongest for the early years of the university. There is a modest holding of early photographs.
There is an Honorary Archivist. The archive catalogue is not on-line, and individual enquiries about content and access are welcome at any time.
More information on the development of the University can be found on Our History pages.
