This site is a prototype web-based tool for interacting with the DIRTMAP database described in: Kohfeld, K E. & Harrison, S. P. (2001) DIRTMAP: the
geological record of dust. Earth-Science Reviews 54, 81-114. The database is an effort to aggregate the large and complex data collected so far describing
dust accumulation rates and other information collected in various formats and timeframes. This tool is an attempt to break the data out of its silo and make
it more visible and accessible. The tool is also a work in progress to demonstrate the use of web-based tools for science communication. We need feedback to develop the tool:
please help by filling in the short form at the bottom of this page or send comments to: d.t.leedal‹at sign›lancaster.ac.uk. Thanks to the DirtMap team for access to the data, and to
DataTables and Omnosis.
Instructions
The data for a number of sites includes a min. and max. age BP value. You can investigate these with the range slider.
The rest of the sites are simply labelled as LGM (last glacial maximum) or MOD (modern). You can add these sites with the toggle buttons.
The map has a draggable re-sizable box that you can use to select a subset of sites based on a latitude longitude box.
The table is searchable and clickable. Clicking centres the map on the clicked site.
Clicking a map marker scrolls the associated value to the top of the table.
