Dr Mark Hounslow
Honorary ResearcherResearch Interests
My main interest is in magnetic geochronology at a variety of times scales- from archaeological to geological. Current interests are in the Antropocene, Pliocene/Miocene, Triassic, Carboniferous, Devonian and Silurian. Areas of research interest are the arctic, Europe, North Africa, Canada and China. I have also focused on sediment tracing from source to sink studies both in the marine and terrestrial aquatic environments, interpreting magnetic proxies for understanding environmental change in sediment and soil records, and sediment micro and macrofabric for environmental interpretation. I am a member of the Geosciences Research Group.
I am the chair of the Subcommission on Triassic Stratigraphy (of the International Commission on Stratigraphy) until 2021 and am also involved in collaborative international efforts of the boundary task forces for the Triassic, Jurassic and Carboniferous Subcommissions. I am a member of the Geological Society of London Stratigraphy Commission, which informs government and the activities of the British Geological survey.

I have taught of wide variety of 1st to 3rd year modules ranging from environmental magnetics, physical geography, Geological field skills and mapping, Geological Hazards, geophysics, solid-earth geology to sedimentology.
PhD Supervision Interests
Self funding projects related to any topic in magnetics-based geochronology at archaeological to geological timescales- with a focus on the arctic, eastern Europe or North Africa. Sediment tracing problems in modern or ancient sedimentary systems. Please make contact, if you are interested in studying these exciting areas in the geosciences.
