Drawing upon lessons from on-the-ground urban sanitation programme in India, the seminar will discuss the challenges of integrating inclusion in urban sanitation, including urban poor, gender, and sanitation workers. The seminar will do a deep dive into occupational safety of sanitation workers.
While the definition of inclusion in urban sanitation has gradually widened internationally, it has not always been clear on how inclusion can be realised on the ground.
In this in-person session, speaker Kavita Wankhade of Indian Institute for Human Settlements will share her experience of learning from practice during the implementation of Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme, a large-scale programme in urban India.
Kavita describes herself as a strong advocate of inclusive planning with a focus on sanitation workers & women in sanitation. Read her report Gender and Social Inclusion across the Sanitation Chain in Tamil Nadu and her Framework for addressing occupational safety of de-sludging operators based on work in two Indian cities. You can also follow Kavita's work on Twitter: @kavita_wankhade.
The session will be chaired by Dr Sally Cawood, Lecturer in Economic Geography at Lancaster Environment Centre.
