Dr Agata Kleczkowska (Polish Academy of Sciences)

In the face of new Russian threats against Ukraine, the talk will review the most important legal questions of the Russia-Ukraine conflict so far and discuss the new tensions between the States. Highlights include the aggression against Crimea and its consequences, the classification of an armed conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing proceedings in international judicial organs. The talk will also try to answer the question whether international law has instruments to effectively prevent Russia from realizing its threats against other States.

Dr Agata Kleczkowska is Assistant Professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include, but are not limited to, the threat and use of force, hybrid threats, statehood, recognition and retorsions. In 2018 she continued her research on armed non-state actors with the Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. She is a Member of the legal expert pool of the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats and of the ILA Study Group on the Role of Cities in International Law. She is also Managing editor of the European Central and East European Law Journal.
