Introduction

Thank you for your interest in this important role at Lancaster University. As the Director of Students, Education, and Academic Services, you’ll play a central role in shaping and delivering our strategic vision. This position provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to an excellent student experience which ensures that our students from all backgrounds are well supported throughout their study and prepared for the world of employment after.

As a valued member of the Professional Services Executive Group [Leadership Team], the Director will be instrumental in enhancing our professional services and academic support throughout the University. Working closely with senior colleagues, you will ensure that our operational student, education and academic services are well-positioned to support the University’s key goals.

This role holds responsibility for ensuring the consistency of experience across all student and education operational processes across the University, reporting into the Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) and University Executive Board.

Student, Education and Academic Services at Lancaster

Lancaster has specialist teams available to all students, and allied services that support our staff to deliver world-class education and pastoral support. Being at University is a big change in a student’s life, whether they are from Newcastle or New Delhi. Our Student and Education Services division has specialist teams to support all students with everything from wellbeing and mental health support to careers financial advice and academic help.

Duties and responsibilities of the role

The successful postholder will be working closely with academic senior managers across the education, student experience, and international briefs, to provide professional advice to promote innovation and best practice in implementing the University strategy across student and academic services.

The role holder will:

Lead collaboration with faculty and professional services to design efficient, user-centred processes across student, education, and academic services, promoting innovation, digital adoption, and value for money.

Develop self-service and 24/7 online services that meet the diverse needs of Lancaster students, both in the UK and internationally, ensuring regulatory compliance and inclusivity.

Ensure robust support for student and academic systems, maintaining high data quality and compliance while using insights to drive improvements. Establish KPIs that align with the University’s strategy and promote continuous service enhancement.

Build and maintain national and international networks to share and influence best practices, aligning services with the University’s goals, while working closely with the Associate Academic Dean for Students to improve the student experience.

Oversee student wellbeing services, safeguarding policies, and compliance with key regulations, including UKVI, OfS, PREVENT, Equality Act, and GDPR, ensuring effective processes and staff training are in place.

Provide leadership during major incidents, ensuring business continuity, and maintain communication protocols with on-campus medical services for managing communicable diseases.

Provide strategic oversight, through delegation, for the development and operational delivery of key University measures of success in relation to graduate employment and effective links with employers to support employability related targets and priorities.

Lead and manage the divisonal staff, ensuring effective staff development, training, and succession planning through Performance and Development Reviews.

Manage the SEAS budget efficiently, identifying opportunities for reducing duplication, improving service delivery, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Remuneration and benefits

The salary for this post is within the Senior Salary Framework boundaries of £103,167 and £139,579 with the final offer subject to the experience and expertise of the successful candidate as part of a well-developed framework that allows reward progression.

Annual leave

The standard University leave year currently runs from 1 October to 30 September. The entitlement for a full year is 39 days (pro rata for part time staff). This is made up of 25 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays plus 6 University closure days. As a compassionate employer we also offer paid special leave to help you cope with family emergencies.
