The Times has also published a feature on Lancaster's History Department, 'History degrees offer insight into the issues of today' (25/09/18). The article points to the department's high rankings and its strong and expanding undergraduate intake, linked to the department's 'high scores in teaching quality, student experience and employment outcomes'.

The article also cites the enduring relevance of History degrees, as Sophie Ambler, Lecturer in Later Medieval British and European History, explains: 'The skills a history degree teaches students are partly about understanding peoples, societies, economies and governments, and how they work and why they fail. Whether you are talking about issues such as the rise in tyrants and what people can do when governments fail them, or the spread of disease in a world without antibiotics, or the causes of endemic poverty, history provides precedents to students that they can get to grips with.'

The article points to the various ways by which the History Department supports its students in their move from university to the workplace, including the department's emphasis on teaching quality, in which small group seminars play an integral role, as well as the opportunities for students to study abroad and undertake heritage work placements with partners such as the National Trust and the Duchy of Lancaster.

As Head of Department Ian Gregory says, 'History has always given people a very broad base for employability, so we get people going into a huge range of destinations from things like the big accountancy firms to teaching, and pretty much all points in between.'

The guide confirms the department's privileged spot as a top ten History department at a top ten university. It also highlights some of the features that make Lancaster University one of the most highly ranked universities in the UK and an excellent choice for students.

Lancaster is ranked 3rd overall in the UK for graduate prospects. The guide links this with teaching quality, highlighting Lancaster's gold award in the TEF, and noting that 'the panel found a “culture of research-stimulated learning” that provided the knowledge, skills and understanding that is most highly valued by employers.'

Lancaster provides students with a variety of study options at home and abroad, and flexibility in shaping their degree. The guide points to the addition of new degree schemes and study abroad options, building on the fact that 'hundreds of Lancaster students already spend part of their courses in America, Asia, Australia or Europe.' The guide also commends the fact that 'the university has always championed a flexible degree structure in which the majority of undergraduates make their final choice of degree only at the end of the first year.'

The guide also recognises the quality of Lancaster's campus, with itsaccommodation, arts scene and sports facilities all impressing, and highlights the ready access to the historic town and Lake District that Lancaster students enjoy. As the guide notes, 'Lancaster has won the award for the best halls in the National Student Housing Survey six times and is a finalist again in 2018.'

At the same time, Lancaster's place on the global stage is recognised, with Lancaster being 'the only UK university with a presence in sub-Saharan Africa, having opened a campus in Ghana'. The university's partnerships with institutions in China, India, Pakistan and Malaysia are also commended.
