Event Details

A full-day study event with Dr Alan Crosby (British Association for Local History) considering examples of ‘riot and rebellion’ from our region, exploring the events themselves and their underlying causes, and emphasising the North-Western and local dimension.

The history of North West England over the last five centuries has been punctuated by periods of unrest, insecurity, dissent and popular protest. Sometimes political in motivation, but more often with underlying or overt economic causes, these episodes highlighted structural problems in society and government, or more short-term fears of financial hardship and unemployment. Some relate to crises which threatened the stability and indeed survival of the realm itself, while others had more immediate local causes. Some are celebrated nationally or even internationally (such as Peterloo in 1819) while others are now almost forgotten.

Join us for our annual study day with Dr Alan Crosby (British Association for Local History), this time focussed on riot and rebellion. Please note this event will be for in-person attendance only and will not be recorded.
