The Gettysburg Lecture 2024, with Dr Ian Isherwood.
Gettysburg Pennsylvania is a historic town. It is known for being the site of the largest battle of the Civil War and as the site of Abraham Lincoln’s iconic Gettysburg Address. Being the bloodiest battle on American soil, it is also one of the largest memorial spaces in the world, boasting over a thousand monuments and markers, and a national cemetery with thousands of interned American veterans. In this talk, Dr. Ian Isherwood (Gettysburg College) will discuss his new book project that is anchored in this historic site of war memory. He will discuss the complexities of remembrance landscapes and what they do (and do not) tell us about the wars that they memorialize.
