Hello! We are looking for children (ages 4 to 10) who are growing up in the UK with European Portuguese and English as their native languages.

The project will help us understand how to support bilingualism in children. If you and your child are interested in participating, please read on.

How does this study work?

This study is run online, via your internet browser. Parents supervise the tasks – but should not help, of course. There is no right or wrong way, we just want to understand what each child can do in English and in (European) Portuguese.

Each child completes five short tasks. There is also a background questionnaire for parents.

Once the tasks are completed, we will send you an Amazon voucher for 20 GBP.

We will also invite you to an optional online Q&A session on successful bilingualism, in case you are interested in asking questions about bilingualism or in learning the results of our study. The optional Q&A session will take place in the school year 2024-2025, after we have completed data collection.

The reason we are focusing on European Portuguese has to do with the tasks we need to use; these are designed to test this specific variety of Portuguese. Needless to say, we value and cherish all varieties of Portuguese!

Portuguese language version

Olá! Estamos à procura de crianças entre os 4 e os 10 anos que estejam a crescer e a viver no Reino Unido e que tenham Português Europeu e Inglês como línguas maternas.

O projeto que estamos a desenvolver vai ajudar-nos a compreender como promover o bilinguismo em crianças. Se estiver interessado/a em participar juntamente com a sua criança, por favor, leia as informações que se seguem.

Como funciona este estudo?

Este estudo será feito online, através do seu navegador da internet. Os pais devem supervisionar as tarefas feitas pelas crianças, mas, claro, não devem ajudar. Não há respostas certas ou erradas. Apenas queremos compreender o que cada criança é capaz de fazer em Inglês e em Português Europeu.

Cada criança irá completar 5 breves tarefas. Há, também, um questionário sociolinguístico para os pais.

Assim que terminar todas as tarefas, enviar-lhe-emos um voucher da Amazon no valor de 20 GBP.

Gostaríamos também de o/a convidar para participar uma sessão de Q&A online sobre casos de sucesso de bilinguismo. A sessão é voluntária e opcional, mas, se tiver questões sobre bilinguismo ou quiser saber mais sobre o nosso estudo, será muito bem-vindo/a. A sessão terá lugar no ano letivo de 2024-2025, quando terminarmos a recolha de dados.

A razão por que estamos a estudar o Português Europeu prende-se com as tarefas que iremos usar e que foram pensadas para testar, especificamente, características desta variedade. Isto não significa, claro está, que não valorizamos todas as variedades do Português!
