Dr Felicity Connolly
Senior Clinical Lecturer in General PracticeProfile
As Co-Director of Primary Care Academic Teaching I lead the primary care core theme in the Medicine MBChB curriculum at a university strategic level at Lancaster University Medical School - development, delivery, assessment and quality assurance of the program. My role involves leading a large team of academic GPs to plan, design and deliver the Primary Care, GP and Community Curriculum across all five undergraduate years, including recruiting, supporting, and coordinating undergraduate GP and community placements. I am a member of a national network of all UK medical school undergraduate GP-leads (GP Head of Teachers Group), working strategically to influence UK medical training to increase the numbers of graduates choosing a career in general practice. My role as Clinical Lead for Education for Sustainable Healthcare (ESH) and Planetary Health involves leading on integrating ESH into health care curricula to prepare future health professionals for the impacts of climate and environmental change on health. I am a member of the national working group who run the Medical Schools Council ESH Alliance. I am involved in national and global networks to advance the emerging field of ESH. I was a contributing author to the first ever UK National Curriculum for Sustainable Healthcare which has been presented internationally in multiple forums and across multiple health education programs, including at CoP27 and AMEE 24. I am a member of Lancaster University Faculty of Health and Medicine Sustainability Group, and represent Lancaster University at the European Network of Climate and Health Education (ENCHE).As an academic GP I am strongly committed to medical education and influencing the way we train our future doctors with a positive experience of primary care and sustainable healthcare. I feel this even more strongly in the context of the current pressures on the UK NHS - especially in general practice. My career in clinical general practice has been diverse and has enabled me to work - and experience life – in different areas of the UK and abroad, from inner city to remote rural practices. Having trained and worked extensively in areas of deprivation, I have an interest in the social determinants of health and addressing health inequalities - which are especially magnified by the effects of climate and environmental change. I work as a GP in South Cumbria, UK. I believe deeply that strengthening primary care across global health structures is the key to accelerating universal health coverage as envisioned by the UN and WHO in the Declaration of Astana 2018 and UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.
