Key Concepts in Havana

Transformation

In Cuba, transition (or a more accurate term in the case of Cuba is ‘transformation’) relates to the entrance of the city into a new phase of the urbanisation process.

The crisis of the 1990 ́s had contributed to the deterioration of the housing situation across Cuba, reactivating internal migration towards Havana prompting the (re)emergence of informal settlements particularly in the outskirts of the city and other interstitial areas.

In this project we aim to understand if there any notion of socio-technical transition reflected in the urban policy, mobility approaches and waste management.

Intersectionality

We want to understand if there us and intersectional reflection in our study cases.

Imaginaries of change

In Havana we want to identify what projects could inform a mentality change at the policy level and in practice? And how to train a new generation of actors?
