Joanne is a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship, having joined what was then the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in January 2008. Joanne is the Director of Teaching for the department, as well as Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Her current research activities are focused on the role of place, that includes people, communities and the physical environment, in the entrepreneurial process. One focus is on the importance of time and place, and how entrepreneurship influences and is influenced by the histories and traditions of place, and how entrepreneurship is shaped by and shapes the meaning of place for people and communities. Research also draws on the notion of sustainable or responsible entrepreneurship and the relationship between entrepreneurship and people, communities the natural environment.

Her work has been influenced by the works of Mikhail Bakhtin, as well as practice-based theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu. One of her current projects, based on a small community in Ireland, involves understanding the role of stories and storytelling in constituting the relationship between people, place and time, which is helping to further understand the relationship between the past and possible futures, or between tradition and progression.

Joanne entered academia following a career as a business and marketing consultant working with a number of small and large organizations.
