Studying Languages and Linguistics at Lancaster University has been ranked within the top 15 in the UK in the latest national league table from the Guardian, with the University overall coming 11th and being named as “one to watch”.

The Guardian University Guide 2025 recognised strong performances for subject rankings across the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including the study of Languages and Linguistics in 14th place. Languages and Linguistics were also ranked 16th for careers and 11th for teaching satisfaction.

Situated within the School of Global Affairs, the study of languages at Lancaster University offers a distinctive approach to language learning by placing it within a global context. Covering English-, French-, Spanish-, Chinese-, German- and Italian-speaking worlds, students are offered the opportunity to acquire both high-level language skills and a thorough understanding of international cultures and societies.

Lancaster University has retained the top spot in the North West of England as well as maintaining its overall place as 11th out of 122 UK Universities. In addition to this, Lancaster has been labelled as ‘one to watch’ within a special feature by the Guardian. One of three ‘rising stars’ of this year’s guide, Lancaster has been described as a ‘model of consistency’ within its high placed ranking for more than a decade, recognised particularly for its graduate outcomes and the high satisfaction within its teaching and student support.
