The work of the Friends of Lancaster University in America

Many Americans who have attended Lancaster over the years remember their time at Lancaster as a very special experience that has remained with them and enriched their lives. The Friends of Lancaster University in America Inc. allows US-based alumni to help the next generation of students to share in the Lancaster experience through tax-deductible philanthropic support.

The generosity of American alumni makes a substantial contribution to University life. The Directors express their appreciation and gratitude to supporters of the Friends, and invite all alumni based in the States to consider contributing to this work.

Unrestricted funds raised by the Friends have been used to help Lancaster University students facing financial hardship, to help build a Mock Court Room for students at the Law School, and to support Lancaster's world-class work in sustainable agriculture to help "feed the world".

Although US charity law requires that the Directors choose how donated funds are used, they are very supportive of donors who wish their donation to fund a specific area of work. Projects supported at the request of donors have included a chair in the Management School, many scholarship initiatives, social mobility outreach, colleges and sports activities.

If you wish to support a particular area of work, please note this for the Directors' consideration.

Welcome from the President

Bruce Sewell, Former Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Apple is also the President of the Friends of Lancaster University in America, Inc.

"More than 3,000 alumni of Lancaster University live in the United States. This includes Americans who spent their Junior Year Abroad at Lancaster during an American degree course, Americans like me, who gained a full degree at Lancaster, and alumni from Britain and other countries working in the States in our interconnected age. We are all part of Lancaster's rising global profile and can be proud of its international impact and achievements.

My fellow Directors and I helped set up the Friends - a 501(c) 3 organisation - in 2009 to make it easier for us all to maintain our connection with Lancaster. The Friends is about people - check out the profiles of our board members and supporters, and the students whose lives they have touched. It's also about a sense of place - what makes Lancaster, set in a damp northwest corner of England, so special to us all? And finally, it's about giving back, to help future generations create their own special memories as they prepare to make their way in the world with the help of their Lancaster education.

Of the more than 3,000 US-based Lancaster alumni, we do not have current contact information for at least a third. Please help us by registering on the Lancaster University Alumni website and keeping your own contact information up to date, and by encouraging your friends to update their own information. Staying in touch, we can create a vibrant, growing network that will enrich all our lives."
