What’s the role?

All colleges have three part-time Community Assistants that work together to help deliver the Lancaster experience as part of the wider college team. You can expect to work an average of ten hours per week across the year from mid-September to mid-July. It’s varied work that includes preparing for Arrivals Day and helping out on Graduation Day; planning and assisting with social events, upholding the rules and ensuring compliance for the benefit of everyone, attending college meetings, engaging with the student population and helping them to get the most out of their time here.

What kind of people are you looking for?

A cross section of the university community! We need 27 people that are organised and who want to contribute to the college communities. You’ll need good people skills and the ability to deal with difficult situations from time to time. You’ll have a positive energy and enthusiasm and work well as part of a team, as well as having an awareness of cross-cultural issues and the differing needs of people from different backgrounds.

How does it work?

Our successful College Community Assistants will live together to make networking easy. Those working in Bowland, County, Furness and Fylde will live in a County townhouse, while those working in Grizedale, Pendle, Cartmel and Lonsdale will live in a Grizedale townhouse. Those appointed by Graduate College will live together in a house on Alexandra Park. The weekly cost of these rooms is £177.03.

Some weeks will be busier, some quieter, so a flexible approach to work is to be expected. You may work more hours in some weeks than others, but on average you’re expected to contribute ten hours per week. It’s a University Grade 3 post which currently pays £12.33 per hour (including holiday pay).

How does the recruitment process work?

Look out for the post when it comes up on the Employment and Recruitment Service website on 9 April. You’ll find the full job description there. We’ll be asking for your CV as well as a letter that sets out why you want the role and what you can bring to it.

Following on from that we will invite candidates to a selection event that will involve some group scenarios for candidates to work on, and a short panel interview.

For more information you can talk to your College and Accommodation Managers, or any of the current Community Assistants. You can also email us with any further queries you might have.
