About This Session

This session consists of some gentle warm-up exercises to get you into the swing of using
this website and doing some simple things with corpora. This includes a basic introduction to one of the functions of
WordSmith, the main topic of this section of the course.
Like every session in the course, this session is divided into four pages, which you can
access through the links at the top of the page. However, we recommend starting with page one and going onwards!
The bar at the side of every page contains the links you will need to navigate the site as
a whole. Note especially that there is a full index of webpages
   available.
Every session consists of a series of exercises or instructions that show you how to do some
practical task in Corpus Linguistics. Many of the practical instructions assume that you are using the B66 Laboratory in
the Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language at Lancaster University. If you are not, you should consult
your systems administrator for details on how to adapt the instructions for your location.

This site is not intended to explain the theory of Corpus Linguistics but rather to
demonstrate some elementary aspects of its practice. There follow some links to other Lancaster websites that may
prove useful if you need to look up theoretical matters.
