The River Rhône rises in the Rhône Glacier in north east Valais, Switzerland. It enters Lake Geneva near Montreux and leaving Lake Geneva enters eastern France, flowing south to Arles where it separates into the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône before entering the Meditterarean Sea. Unlike the Rhine, the Rhône remains an Alpine river before reaching its delta. Ruskin describes its character in Praeterita (1885-89) ( Works, 35.326-28). In a passage intended for the unrealised third volume of Praeterita he describes the Rhône as the most loved of his 'river tutors' ( Works, 35.365).
