Ruskin is here presumably referring back to his discussion at MP I:84 of Masaccio's Tribute Money. The painting by Masaccio of The Tribute Money is part of the fresco cycle of the Life of St. Peter commissioned by Felice Brancacci in 1424 for the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence.
Tommaso Guidi Massacio 1401-28
Tribute Money c.1425
Pigment on wet plaster, 255x598cm
Further Comments: Ruskin describes a painting with a faded background, although he is not specific about to which he is referring, however, 'Tribute Money' illustrates well such a background scene. The digital image is a copy, by Ruskin, of the background of the 'Tribute Money'.
