[M2.175L] [M2.175] 175 (Of indignation against the world, Remember 8th verse of 37th Psalm that the change from a state of life to a state of death, Conf. however, Jeremiah 6, 27, 29. is instantaneous: Yet we have no difficulty in understanding what is meant when we say that a man is Dying: He may be dying for some hours - or for some days - or for some months; but he is certainly to be considered dying from the time he is first struck by a moral disease, or at least, all the time such disease is making progress: Nay in some sense, as we are making progress towards death, we die daily; but in no doubtful sense we are dying from the time the preparations for death begin to be made in our frame. Is not this or may it not be true also of conversion; Is not a man Converting - as we say he is dying: Does not he sometimes die to the world just as slowly and with as hard struggles as his physical form expires. Does not his Christian soul give up the world grievously and agonizingly, till it comes to the last gasp of sin, and is dead to it. Some persons are doubtless converted as a man is killed by lightning Some are converted not knowing how - as men die in their sleep, some struggle with their conversion and thrust if off by strength of heart as men do their deaths, and some it is a lingering conversion of many wearing years. (Thus conf. Peter with Paul) Now p 5 of M S
