They are on the whole, the best of the palace except the lovely sea angle. The 29th is a copy of it by the Bon school and most instructive in its inferiority. The main plan being kept the ribs are fined down, and therefore do not tell in effect upon the eye; they look half washed out; the lobes are confused in their lie, and very poor: and the angle leaves have a recess instead of a rib at the bottom: x Then the Bon leaves have a less certain outline; are more softly modulated and are a little undercut so as to have only their edges visible: now in the early ones, the edge is even cut a little up; so as to be seen from below and like the light strongly showing the outline.
