Upper arcade: Inner Cortile, Palazzo Ducali ‘Fig 1 p No 65 is a rude approximation to the arch section - a b of course soffit & moulding same on both sides: Some of the piers are solid, of the singular plan fig 2 in which note [p.85] the beaked bird walnut like angle is assuredly less than a rt L. Others of the piers are four shafts about a central one: All grand in the highest degree, & their capitals mighty, and magnificently fused together: Florid with heads mixed - I cannot guess their time - the heads are large and ugly, & not so delicate in cutting as those of the outside capitals: Fig 3 is the section of that of the five shafts - fig 4 of the bottom of that of the solid pier: abaci & flower work alike: fig 5 the base of all - I never saw so flat a one: worked with exquisite shield decorated leaves like the outside ones.’ Notebook M pp.84-5.
