Unidentified building. Works, 10.302 (facing) Plate XVII (No 1) This double arch appears very similar to the image on Sheet No. 206. Ruskin states that his illustration at Plate XVII shows: the use of the flat but highly enriched architrave [. . .] These windows (figs, 1 and 2, Plate 17) are from a narrow alley in a part of Venice now exclusively inhabited by the lower orders, close to the Arsenal’ p.303. Ruskin also makes a connection between this Plate and Plate IX (Gothic Archivolts) at Works, 11.280 where he notes: ‘The reader will see at once the resemblance of character in the various flat brick mouldings, 3 to 11 [of Plate 1X]. They belong to such arches as 1 and 2 in Plate 17, Vol. 11’
