Lindsay (1847) I.69 refers to a Dome as ‘a vast hemispheric globe, over the populous stillness of some ancient city, suggesting ideas of perfection, durability and repose, on which the mind might brood for ages. - Martin must have felt this strongly in designing his vision of the Celestial City for the ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’.

The reference is to The Celestial City and River of Bliss, 1841, by John Martin (1789 - 1854).
