See the distinction made by Ruskin at Works, 9.43 between ecclesiastical and civil Gothic in Venice. Ruskin’s point at Verona Book p.22 is that Byzantine and Renaissance builders, unlike Gothic builders, used the same style for both ecclesiastical and civil buildings. So the civil Casa Loredan and the ecclesiastical St. Mark’s are similar in style during the Byzantine period, and the civil Ca’ Dario and the ecclesiastical Santa Maria dei Miracoli are similar in style during the Renaissance period.
