Notebook M2 pp.161-2 ‘This raising on pedestals has entirely spoiled the bases of the Nave piers which are as fig 1 p 3 Veron book [Ruskin is here refering to Verona Book p.53L] - or rather the circular bases should not expand so much; for there is no proportion nor ease about them they are cramped and small and pinched in and the heavy or rather awkward pedestal still more pinched close to their edge, while the harsh angles of the vaulting pier going straight down unbanded produces a combination so awkward and harsh that an Italian eye could not have endured it for a moment.’
