leafage
Ruskin’s study of the leafage of the capitals of the lower arcade of the Ducal Palace begins at Notebook M2 p.93.
Notebook M2 p.101 ‘The Third Order: Transitional Examples:
‘The 30th . 31st & 32nd . are difficult to place: for they come between the 2nd & third orders: The 30th has the leafage of the Third {order} as above described {angle leaves ribbed} but the cabled section of the second order. The 32nd has the same arrangement. while the 31st has the section of the third order and leafage of second: its abacus is however more projecting in its members - heavy and ill conditioned and it has a vilely cut lobe flower band.’
