[drawing]

One of the upper zigzag capitals of the Southwest Portico of St Mark’s southern façade.

The diagram at Notebook M p.202L indicates that this capital (d) is the one on the right. This stands on top of the large Carta Shaft A which supports the upper five columns. Ruskin writes ‘At l w is the shaft d.’ Notebook M p.203. However, as Unrau has noted, during restoration ‘the second-storey shafts were not even replaced in their original order’ and ‘The capitals of the second storey have been drastically rearranged [since Ruskin drew them]. While all four of the south face were of the zigzag type before reconstruction, the second from the west is now a small leafy specimen. Deeply withdrawn into the shade beside its scintillating partner, it is painfully out of place in the composition.’ Unrau (1984) p.116-7
