As usual Ruskin at Works, 10.391 gives his interpretation, and translation into classical Latin of what he saw - ‘obedientiam domino exhibeo’. His drawing suggests that the second part of what he saw was A DNO EXIBEO. It would be interesting to know what evidence he had for ‘obedientiam’, both the disappearance of a mark of contraction and the ‘t’ rather than ‘c’.
