This is a version of ‘NOTO(S)’, the south wind, in Latin, Greek and literary Italian. Strangely it is read as ‘Hotro’ at Works, 10.429 and the word even merits an entry in the Index volume. It is impossible to give any explanation of ‘Hotro’ apart from it being a misreading of Ruskin’s handwriting.
