The pencil notes here indicate Ruskin’s first impressions of the inscription, later overwritten with ‘IUVENTUTI’ his interpretation of it. SO[L?], the last letter is unclear as Ruskin recorded his initial observation. He came to see it as an ‘L’ to produce SOL, the sun, governor of ‘iuventus’
