The word is clearly intended to be the plural of ‘fico’, ‘fig’. The plural in Italian is ‘fichi’ in order to keep the hard ‘c’ sound before ‘i’ Ruskin seems unsure whether to follow Italian or English conventions for the use of ‘ch’
