The Ruskin Library Transcript T7A reads ‘modulating’. Ruskin does extend the draughtsman’s sense of ‘modulating’ at Works, 5.556 [n/a] where he refers to the ‘modulating grace’ of lines in fast flowing water, and the reading is possible here. However, a comparison with the word ‘modulation’ at Notebook M p.19 casts some doubt on the reading of the word here as ‘modulating. ‘Undulating’ may perhaps be a possible reading of the manuscript and its more neutral connotations might be preferable here.
