Ruskin was concerned with the dating of tombs as a source for relating chronological sequence, architectural form, and moral judgments about the occupant of the tomb or the circumstances in which it was made.

[There appears to be some confusion in the Cappello references here. Gothic Book p.19 seems to refer to Vittore Cappello. His monument is by Rizzo and on the facade of the church of Sant’ Elena. At Gothic Book p.19 the tomb is also said to be of Giacomo Cappello, though Giacomo is struck out. That is on the east side of the north transept door of St John and St Paul, and seems to be what Ruskin has in mind for both these references.]
