Speranza in Deo

Ruskin at Palace Book p.30L sees the first word as the Latin present participle of ‘spero’ and the last as Deo (as opposed to the contracted form ‘DNO’), so ‘hoping in God’. At Notebook M p.165 in his account of the 9th Capital of the Ducal Palace. Series of Capitals of Lower Arcade he changes his mind and reads it as the vernacular ‘speranza in deo’.
