‘C R C III Q’ in the transcript is best seen as a drawing by Ruskin of the shape of the inscription that he saw. The note on Notebook M p.128L shows that Ruskin came to recognise it as the word ‘ordine’.
‘URUIIIV’ is another drawing, later crossed out, and perhaps another attempt at the word later read as ‘ordine’. She is inordinate greed.
