The word is used in this sense by Reynolds in Discourse VIII referring to the red scarf given by Titian to Ariadne, in Bacchus and Ariadne, to ‘relieve’ her from the sea, to make her stand out. It is used by Ruskin in the same sense at Works, 9.12.
