p 43, 44 French book

There can be no doubt that the reference is to Notebook N. The only other references to a French Book are in Notebook M2 p.77 and Notebook M2 p.78, and those references to French Book pages 47, 48, and 49 are in every detail consistent with French Book being Notebook N. The chronology of the notes referring to the Palazzo Cavalli said to be ‘near the Post Office’ suggests that all the references to French Book were made at much the same time towards the end of February. It is speculative but not impossible that Ruskin was writing up all the notes referring to the ‘French Book’ in one spell of work.

N has substantial notes on Amiens, and appears from the overwritten pencil notes at the beginning to have been used by Ruskin as a basis for his first diary entry of the journey in Dijon on Saturday October 6th 1849. ‘French Book’ would, therefore, be an easy way to think of it for Ruskin.
