It seems a possible view of the state of the manuscript that Ruskin originally wrote ‘of men’, then struck it out when he realised that he had used ‘of men’ in the second part of the sentence. When ‘of men’ was struck out in the second part of the sentence, he inserted a mark above ‘of men’ in the first part to indicate that it should stand.
