This note represents a later attempt to read ‘me comcuburit’ on Notebook M p.169, made more difficult for the reader now with the ambiguities in Ruskin’s handwriting added to the problems of reading the inscription itself.
‘cuburit/comburit’ and ‘coburit/cumburit’ are both possible readings of the manuscript, with an ‘r’ rather that a ‘v’. The second of each of the two pairs is perhaps to be preferred as a reading of the capitals as they are. The meaning, ‘consumes’, ‘burns up’, as in ‘combustion’, is unchanged. The reference is to the figure of ‘Invidia’ in the 10th capital (‘here’) and the 30th capital (‘the other’) of the Ducal Palace. Series of Capitals of Lower Arcade, and this is a clarification of the note on Invidia on Notebook M p.169.
