The reference is to the late 13th century tracery of the east window of the chapel of Merton College, Oxford. Ruskin had worked on Merton College windows in July 1848 (see Works, 8.127).
In the manuscript ‘east’ is a hastily written insertion between ‘large’ and ‘window’.
